CHUMBE ISLAND LODGE - Zanzibar
The Chumbe Island Coral Park a unique privately managed nature reserve developed and managed by the Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd. which also manages the lodge. It is a rare example of a still pristine coral island ecosystem in an otherwise heavily over fished and over-exploited area. The reserve includes a reef sanctuary, which has become the first marine park in Tanzania, and a forest reserve.
After the discovery of Chumbe's incredibly bio-diverse reef eco-system several years of campaigning by CHICOP succeeded in officially closing the fringing reef West of Chumbe Island in October 1992. With Chumbe being located upstream of the most important fishing grounds opposite Zanzibar's capital, Stonetown, the Chumbe reef provides a protected breeding ground for fish, corals and other species which can then spread out to recolonise nearby overfished and degraded areas. This makes Chumbe's protection of vital importance to both the preservation of bio-diversity and the fisheries economy in the region. On the 24th of December 1994 the Zanzibar Government officially gazetted the reef as the "Chumbe Reef Sanctuary".
Accommodation on Chumbe Island is really special. It's what Robinson Crusoe could only have dreamt about! The bungalows themselves are so brilliantly designed that they provide both privacy and a sense of freedom of living in the open (see "Eco-bungalows" for more information). Travellers find bungalows exceptionally romantic (honeymooners love them), but any individual with a passion for natural beauty will find these bungalows captivating beyond measure. However, they are more on the rustic side then deluxe... consider a Robinson Carusoe adventure with more comfort. All bungalows overlook the sea and it takes just 30 seconds to stroll from the comforts of your bungalow hammock to feeling the warm tropical ocean lapping at your feet. All bungalows are equipped with: double or twin beds in the sleeping area under the palm thatched roof,
self-contained bathrooms with hot & cold shower, large living rooms, equipped with handmade furniture and decorated with African art and colorful fabrics... (and very comfortable hammocks).
Since there are only seven bungalows, the island never gets crowded, even when we are fully booked.
Tariff includes everything except alcoholic drinks. All the food, soft drinks, snacks, park fees, park ranger services like forest walks, guided snorkeling on the reef (with all equipment provided), scheduled boat transfers back and forth to the island, etc. And, if you're not quite sure about your snorkeling skills: our experienced rangers provide excellent tuition.
