SPECIAL MIGRATION SAFARI: Why are you going on safari? To have the best game viewing experience possible and hopefully see part of the great migration. This is truly hard to predict - but why book a safari that does not visit the areas that give the best opportunity during the time of year you are traveling? Born Free has designed our safaris to change during seasons. If our chart confuses you – or you need clarification on the exact itinerary – do not hesitate to contact our office.
The wildlife moves throughout the year to different areas. One cannot always predict exactly where the vast herds will be, but through the years we have learned to gear travelers to areas that would most likely be great for viewing the herds. The Serengeti south is great in December - March, but during the remainder of the year the game is dispersed. Tarangire is great between July - November, but during the rest of the year we would suggest time spent in other areas.
In our effort to truly follow the migration – this safari's routing will change throughout the year based on past migrations. |

Day 2 - SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, you will be escorted to your flight into the Serengeti National Park. Upon arrival you are met by our professional safari guide board your 4x4 safari vehicle and then you are off on your first game drive – working your way to camp. The Serengeti is the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. The Kopjes, massive islands of granite standing in a sea of grass, provide shelter to a great variety of animals including lions, and the ever elusive leopard. Serengeti National Park, the largest in Tanzania, occupies about 14,763 square kilometers. The name Serengeti means endless plains and is derived from the Masai word 'siringiti'. You are now in the southern eco-system of the Mara plains. As in all ecosystems, the vegetation and types of animals you find are closely correlated. The principal features of the park are the short and long grass open plains in the southeast, the acacia savannah in the central are, the hilly, more densely wooded central northern section and the extensive woodland and black clay plains, dominated by the central ranges of mountains in the western corridor.
Base for explorations will depend on departure date *
May - June: Mbalageti | July - Oct: Migration Camp | Dec - March: Ndutu, Mbaze Mawe, Private Camp
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3-4 - SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Day
5 - OLDUVAI to NGORONGORO HIGHLANDS
This morning we drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands, stopping at Olduvai Gorge along the route, we observe the site where Leakey's discovery of the remains of Homo Erectus, brought crucial understanding to the study of the evolution of man.
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 -
NGORONGORO CRATER
Continue your journey as you descend 2,000 feet in 4x4 vehicles into the largest, undamaged caldera in the world. This World Heritage Site is estimated that more than 30,000 animals can be found within the crater walls at any one time. It is home to the largest non-migratory populations of wildlife in East Africa including prides of lion, the rare black rhino, elephant, cheetah, antelope, great herds of Cape buffalo and so many more. Because the crater floor is mostly grassland with patches of acacia woodland, game viewing is excellent. Explore the forest areas where you can see monkey and elephant, the lake area where you may see the beautiful flamingos and the open savannahs where the majestic "Kings", the lions, hunt for food. Following your game drive return to your lodge, perched along the rim.
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 7 - LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, depart on a drive across the Ngorongoro Highlands and down the Great Rift Valley Wall to Lake Manyara National Park. The park is located 75 miles south west of Arusha. More that two thirds of this small park (127 square miles) are covered by lake. The park lies at the foot of the escarpment of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley at an altitude of 3,100 feet. Lake Manyara National Park has five different vegetation zones including groundwater forest with giant fig and mahogany trees, marshlands and reedbeds, stretches of open grassland, acacia woodland, and, on the escarpment slopes, thorn bushes and baobabs. The highlight of the park's wildlife is the wonderful hippo population. Elephant, giraffe, monkeys, lion and impala are also to be found. Over 380 species of birds have been identified within the park.
Lake Manyara Serena Lodge or Kirurumu (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
KENYA
Day 8-10 - MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE
Up early this morning and fly on a connecting flight to the Masai Mara Game Reserve - great anytime of the year. The Masai Mara borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and is the same eco-system. The landscape is mostly open Savannah grasslands and acacia scrubland. Many times of the year you will see a large number of lion, hippo, crocodile and vultures - all of which prey on the weak and young migrating animals. Other game to be found in the Masai Mara at any time of the year include: elephants, cheetahs, baboons, gazelles, giraffes, jackals, leopards, hyenas, water buffalo, ostriches and a large variety of antelope and bird life.
During your stay in the Mara – you will search for the game you have yet to see but our Special Feature is the chance now to get out of the vehicle with Walks, Night Drives and true off-the-beaten path Cultural Interactions to local communities.
Your Choice: We know you have heard of the many wonderful properties in the Mara (and in East Africa) – the Mara section of the safari can be booked as you please - we highly recommend Leleshwa Camp for it’s very personal service and off the beaten track experiences. If cultural interactions, walks, night drives are not important to you, we can also highly recommend Little Governor’s Camp and Kichwa Tembo – or just let us know your preference.
Leleshwa Review From Traveler (Highly Recommended): "...Leleshwa is located in a concession area just outside the Mara, so they may offer night drives and walks that you cannot do inside the reserve. It is also located away from the high concentration of camps along the Mara River which means you can have a better game viewing experience without being surrounded by minivans. The food is excellent - hard to believe you can get such wonderful food in the middle of the bush. Drinks are included in the cost and the staff are friendly and very efficient. If you are looking for an authentic safari experience away from the crowds without sacrificing any level of comfort, this is it."
Choice Of Deluxe Camp: Leleshwa Camp / Little Governor's / Kichwa Tembo (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
