SPECIAL MIGRATION SAFARI: Why are you going on safari? To have the best game viewing experience possible and hopefully see part of the great migration. This is truly hard to predict - but why book a safari that does not visit the areas that give the best opportunity during the time of year you are traveling? Born Free has designed our safaris to change during seasons. If our chart confuses you – or you need clarification on the exact itinerary – do not hesitate to contact our office.

The wildlife moves throughout the year to different areas. One cannot always predict exactly where the vast herds will be, but through the years we have learned to gear travelers to areas that would most likely be great for viewing the herds. The Serengeti south is great in December - March, but during the remainder of the year the game is dispersed. Tarangire is great between July - November, but during the rest of the year we would suggest time spent in other areas.

In our effort to truly follow the migration – this safari's routing will change throughout the year based on past migrations.

TANZANIA

Day 1 - ARUSHA, TANZANIA
Upon arrival in Arusha, you are met and greeted by our representative. This evening you will have a safari briefing before the real adventure begins the following morning.
Arusha Coffee Plantation (Dinner)

Day 2-3 - TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, board your 4 x 4 safari vehicle and head out for your first wildlife experience. Drive time approximately 2 hours. While Serengeti's migration is quite well known, little is known of the annual migration to this area. The wildebeest, zebra, elephants tend to migrate away from the Serengeti from July-October and travel to Tarangire in search of prey. Game drives morning and afternoon.

Another day exploring the park looking for resident game such as giraffe, eland, lesser kudu and the predators such as lion, leopard and even wild dog.
Maramboi / Kikoti (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 - LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
After a leisurely breakfast head out on one of the shorter drives to Lake Manyara stopping at the local handicraft market en route. More that two thirds of this small park (127 square miles) are covered by lake. The park lies at the foot of the escarpment of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley at an altitude of 3,100 feet. Lake Manyara National Park has five different vegetation zones including groundwater forest with giant fig and mahogany trees, marshlands and reedbeds, stretches of open grassland, acacia woodland, and, on the escarpment slopes, thorn bushes and baobabs. The highlight of the park's wildlife is the wonderful hippo population. Elephant, giraffe, monkeys, lion and impala are also to be found. Over 380 species of birds have been identified within the park.
Plantation Lodge / Ngorongoro Farmhouse (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 - NGORONGORO CRATER
Up early this morning and descend 2,000 feet in 4x4 vehicles into the largest, undamaged caldera in the world. This World Heritage Site is estimated that more than 30,000 animals can be found within the crater walls at any one time. It is home to the largest non-migratory populations of wildlife in East Africa including prides of lion, the rare black rhino, elephant, herds of Cape buffalo and many more. Explore the forest areas where you can see monkey and elephant, the lake area where you may see the beautiful flamingos and the open savannahs where the majestic "Kings", the lions, hunt for food. Following your game drive return to your lodge, perched along the rim.
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6 - OLDUVAI GORGE to SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
On your way to the Serengeti stop at Olduvai Gorge, the area where the Leakey's uncovered some of fossil hominids at Olduvai.

Continue you drive into the bush and the fabulous Serengeti Plains. Serengeti National Park, the largest in Tanzania. Game viewing and lodge location will be selected according to the location of the wildlife. On some days you will have full day game drives and on others (when the herds are closer to the lodge) morning and afternoon drives. Wherever the game – you can always count on a dawn game drive.
Mbuze Mawe, Mbalageti or Sayari Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7 - SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
The Serengeti is the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. The Kopjes, massive islands of granite standing in a sea of grass, provide shelter to a great variety of animals including lions, and the ever elusive leopard. Serengeti National Park, the largest in Tanzania, occupies about 14,763 square kilometers. The name Serengeti means endless plains and is derived from the Masai word 'siringiti'. You are now in the southern eco-system of the Mara plains. As in all ecosystems, the vegetation and types of animals you find are closely correlated. The principal features of the park are the short and long grass open plains in the southeast, the acacia savannah in the central are, the hilly, more densely wooded central northern section and the extensive woodland and black clay plains, dominated by the central ranges of mountains in the western corridor. We will take a picnic lunch to get the most advantage of the day.
Mbuze Mawe, Mbalageti or Sayari Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

KENYA

Day 8-10 - MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE
After a dawn game drive board your connecting flight to the Masai Mara arriving in the afternoon. The Masai Mara borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and is the same eco-system. The landscape is mostly open Savannah grasslands and acacia scrubland. Many times of the year you will see a large number of lion, hippo, crocodile and vultures - all of which prey on the weak and young migrating animals. Other game to be found in the Masai Mara at any time of the year include: elephants, cheetahs, baboons, gazelles, giraffes, jackals, leopards, hyenas, water buffalo, ostriches and a large variety of antelope and bird life. Game drives will be at dawn – and full days.
Little Governor's / Kichwa Tembo (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 11 - YOUR JOURNEY ONWARDS
Bid a fond farewell to the Mara as you board your flight back to Nairobi. You are met at the airport where a guide will take you shopping, to the hotel, or a bit of touring before transfers to the airport for your international departure.

(Breakfast)
