Sustainable Tourism
Our world is diverse and wonderful. We travel to meet new people and discover their lands and culture. But, we need to be aware of what the impact our travels have on the environment and the people we meet. Travel in the past did not take in consideration future generations and their enjoyment of the world and its treasures. If our travels are left unchecked, it can lead to cultural exploitation, habitat destruction and unchecked development.
A commitment to Sustainable, Responsible or Eco Tourism will not only minimize the impact on the indigenous people and landscape, but it will also be a positive experience for all those involved. When you 'Travel Responsibly', your journey can not only lead to the conservation of the surrounding environments and cultures -but also enhance the lives of the communities in the areas that you visit.

Born Free Safaris' aim of sustainable tourism is to ensure that our travels are a positive experience for all.
We urge our travelers, and our guides, to observe the SAFARI CODE:
- Respect the wildlife – this is their land.
- Please avoid asking your guide to crowd the animals.
- When observing game, be as quiet as possible and don’t make sudden movements.
- Do not feed the animals. If you have food in your room, it must be completely secured and hidden.
- Never drive off-road unless designated – it damages the habitat.
- Stay in your vehicle at all times, except at designated walking areas.
- Leave no trace. Litter - if you see a piece of paper, please pick it up and throw it in a proper bin.
- Bury soiled toilet papers or take them with you.
- Observe the rules of the park.
- Do not chase the wildlife - ever.
- Do not wear strong smelling toiletries.
CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY: Respecting The Local People
- Respect the local people and their traditions.
- Ask your guide about appropriate forms of behavior.
- Do not criticize the local people, cultures and traditions - this is their land.
- If you would like instruct someone as to how task is done -
Ask, "Would you mind if I show you a different way of doing this?"
- Always ask if you can take a photograph of the local people.
- Do not just give a gift away – this promotes begging. Always ask for something in return.
- Try to learn a bit of the local language.
- Have fun with the people and share your culture and traditions with them.
- If at all possible, stay in properties that give back to the communities. This is not always possible.
If you have the time – Volunteer for a few days in a local community. Born Free Safaris & Tours will be glad to make this arrangement.
